Alameda, CA,
February 27, 2008 – Bay Ship & Yacht announces the
completion of the steering
gear and nozzle replacement of the
American
River, a steel towing vessel built in 1961 which calls the SF
Bay and surrounding tributaries, home.
This complex and extensive project called for the complete replacement
of the existing kort nozzle system and steering gear with a new
custom-ordered and designed Nautican nozzle. The Nautican nozzle came
equipped with triple main rudders and double flanking rudders. The
challenge – to mesh the new system with the existing framing structure
employing smart design modifications that would enhance propeller and
steering performance without a drastic design overhaul.
Bay Ship & Yacht’s expert in-house naval architecture team met the
challenge, engineering a re-design of the existing framing above the
nozzles to meet the new design
specifications. In addition, Bay Ship & Yacht engineers and
master craftsmen worked together to design, fabricate and install
custom raised main deck hatches over the nozzles to allow easy-access
for maintenance. All engineering, full-shop drawings, custom CNC’d
parts, and installation were completed on-site at Bay Ship &
Yacht’s Alameda waterfront location.
As part of the retrofit, BS&Y also installed a new Nautican
steering system including new rams, jockey bars, hydraulic piping and
control system.
