Wooden Boat on Dry Land - Commodore
January 10, 2008 – In December Bay Ship & Yacht completed repairs to the Commodore, an 80’ wooden dinner cruise boat built in Hawaii. The repairs were executed on dry land in BSY’s efficient and modern Syncrolift transfer berthing facility.
A thorough inspection of the vessel was performed by the Bay Ship & Yacht Co. team, including Bill Elliott, company founder. BSY was founded in 1977 by Elliott, specializing in wooden boat construction and restoration.
Bill Elliott states “This project fell directly within the strengths of the BSY team. Over 70 percent of the bow planking was determined to be in need of replacement, and the stem and Sampson post were also found to suffer from significant rot.”
Elliott explains: “This is a typical pattern that we see with wooden boats – anywhere fresh water can infiltrate voids and enclosed spaces is susceptible to rot. That’s what happened to the Commodore- though beautifully constructed, the bow happened to have an area forward of the Sampson post, in way of the hauser pipe which collected fresh water, and over time led to significant structural damage.”
Once on dry land, exploratory surgery was begun to discover the extent of the damage to hull planks. Then the stem - the heavy timber at the bow of the vessel which receives hull plank ends - was removed to the waterline.
With the extent of the damage determined, shipwrights templated, lofted, fabricated and installed a new stem and hull planking from the waterline up. At the forward bow over 75 percent of the port side was renewed, and approximately 30 percent of starboard side was replaced.
The repair was completed in record time under the guidance of Elliott, and delivered for New Year festivities. The holiday season is an important market for the customer, once again fulfilling Bay Ship & Yacht’s focus on total customer satisfaction.
