The Ultimate Test:
Bay Ship & Yacht Puts 720 Long Ton Army LCU on Dry Land

Alameda, CA, January 10, 2008 –Defying the perceived length constraints of its 150 foot syncrolift, Bay Ship & Yacht successfully docked the 174’ LCU 2030 on their 1200 ton Syncrolift, exceeding the overall length by 24’.

The key to the extremely successful docking was that the weight seen by any keel block was significantly lower than the 10 long ton per foot max capacity – actually falling between 5 and 6 long tons per foot.

Bay Ship’s Chief Naval Architect Joel Welter explains: “Determining what vessels can be lifted is a little more complex than just looking at overall length or overall displacement (weight).”

“For the BSY Syncrolift, as with most dry docking systems, the combination of length and weight must be analyzed to determine point loads. The maximum loading for our Lift is 10 long tons (22400 lbs) per foot. So for example, there are a few tugs in the Bay that have a weight to length ratio higher than this value. But we can haul many longer boats with a large safety margin.”

Never the less, the BSY docking engineer and dock masters took a very careful look at all aspects of the haul. With thoughtful planning, the LCU was successfully docked on dry land and transferred to a land berth. It will undergo standard maintenance, including propeller tuning, bottom paint and other work in way of a major refit. Bay Ship & Yacht will complete work on the LCU 2030 in early 2008.

The Bay Ship & Yacht Syncrolift has been in operation for over one year. The LCU is the vessel configuration the system was optimized for when the facility was designed in 2004-05.
